I immediately recognized Nausicaa and felt a wave of nostalgia wash over me. The movie marked the beginning of Studio Ghibli, now a household name in Japan on par with Disney, and made a powerful and lasting impact on me.Ĭhannel-surfing one late night, I stumbled upon Turner Classic Movies’ celebration of Miyazaki’s 65th birthday by premiering many of his movies. I experienced the first of Hayao Miyazaki’s films when I was four years old. My aunt took my cousin and I to go see Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind it was one of the earliest times I actually remember going to the theater. A world where if you meet a strange towering creature in the forest, you curl up on its tummy and have a nap.” Wait… You have a sister….“Here is a children’s film made for the world we should live in, rather than the one we occupy. Satuski leaves Mei with Nanny this time while she’s at school…. Satuski returns and begins looking for Mei who is asleep in the woodsĭad explains everything to Mei (and me) about the spirits Mei then falls asleep on Totoro allowing all the other spirits to see that she won’t hurt them Mei then falls inside a tree to find Totoro asleep Now to stalk this spirit… oh no it just disappearedĪha! She’s distracted by a hole in the house! Now we can escape Those pesky acorns are back! And there’s a trail of them While the elder sister is at school, Mei plays in the garden while Dad does some studying IT’S MORNING!!! Leave me alone! I want 5 more minutes! The family then head to the hospital to check on Mom who’s not wellĢ5 minutes in and so far I’m enjoying what I’m seeing Pretty sure three people riding one bike isn’t safe So… Laughing loudly helps you when you’re scared Our house might fall down from the wind… Better have a bath first How to taunt like a youngster – Stick your tongue out While moving in, Kanta arrives, gives everyone rice cakes and runs away Nanny arrives to introduce herself and explains Soots Meanwhile Mei finally sees a Soot and squishes it Think Dad and the mover just dropped the wardrobe Who keeps leaving all these acorns around? Someone stole the stairs to the upstairs? Soot Gremlins – Or as the subtitles call then “Dustbuddies” There’s not really a whole lot to say… Just a family moving into a new home Well I guess that’s one way to get around the house with your shoes on Why is the dad making his kids sit cramped under a desk in the back of a car?ĪH!!! GIRLS!!! Pretend they’re not there! Keep working! Pretend they’re not there We open with a family driving through a farm to get to their new home Starring – Hitoshi Takagi, Noriko Hidaka, Chika Sakamoto Here is what I had to say while watching 1988’s “My Neighbor Totoro” If you have seen this film then let me know what you thought of it in the comments. It’s an enjoyable film that I can highly recommend especially if you want something to watch when, for example, the weather is a bit wet. It’s really hard to think of what to talk about when there isn’t much to discuss. Most of this film consists of the Satuski and Mei playing in the back garden with spirits until the end of the film where the added tension about Mei’s whereabouts. There isn’t really much to say about this film. It feels weird not seeing anyone as a villain but I feel that if there was one in this film then, I feel, it would’ve ruined it. Directed and written by Hayao Miyazaki, and Terry Gilliam’s favourite anime according to Time Out magazine, this Japanese animated family fantasy film is about two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei), their dad and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan. Time to dip into the oversized box of films I have once again and this time I have 1988’s “My Neighbor Totoro”.
